The hardtop and convertible used a 112 inch wheelbase version, and all models except for Pontiac 455 powered hardtops and convertibles interchange. Sedans, station wagons, and utilities like the El Camino used a 116 inch frame, and the frame is interchangeable, except that the sedan had non-boxed rails.ħ/15/99 update: Here's a frame supplement link, recently abstracted from Chevelle Tech. I drove my EC every day for 8 years and over 150k and never had any problems with frame or suspension. Maybe it does but it must not cause any problems. It should also change when you're just driving around town or pulling into a driveway. I guess there could be some flex but if it's as bad as what your seeing the door gap should change if you just jack your EC up to change a flat. I removed everything else from the frame in front of the firewall. Nothing flexed or sagged as far as I could tell, maybe it would have with the engine in it. I was told when I bought a new exhaust for it that the Grand Prix exhaust system was the same as the 2 door hardtop Pontiac Tempest unless you had the high performance 421" engine in your Grand Prix. I had a '69 Grand Prix in '69 but I can't recall what the frame looked like. If your frame isn't boxed I don't know what kind of frame you have. The '68 Chevelle convertable/coupes are the same, the sedans are slightly longer and all the EC/station wagon dimensions are identical. #1968 el camino frame manualMy service manual has diagrams and measurements of all the '68 car frames and they are all fully boxed. I'm pretty sure the top photo pitts64 posted is not a '68 station wagon frame though. Where the first body mount is located at the firewall it's heavily boxed and there's no way it can sag unless it almost completely rusted away inside. I just looked at my frame and it's boxed just like the bottom photo that pitts64 posted. #1968 el camino frame plusI have an all original '68 EC (on blocks now) plus the original GM overhaul and service manuals. ![]()
